Reverend Christopher Redcay Joins Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary as Director of Spiritual Formation for the Theological Seminary

Effective June 19, 2023, Reverend Christopher Redcay, MS, M.Div., begins his tenure at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary as Director of Spiritual Formation for the Theological Seminary.  He is an alumnus of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary (Class of 1989), and brings to the formation team a wealth of experience and expertise.

His pastoral assignments include: parochial vicar at Holy Innocents Parish, Philadelphia, faculty at Roman Catholic High School, then school minister at Archbishop Carroll High School. Next, he was assistant principal at Archbishop Wood High School, and in 2001, he became the president of Kennedy-Kenrick High School, which was the successor to his alma mater Bishop Kenrick.

In 2007, he was made pastor of Our Lady of Ransom parish in Northeast Philadelphia.  Then, in 2011, he was installed as the pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Malvern, PA, where he served for 12 years.  Father Redcay brought a fresh perspective to the St. Patrick Community, evidenced by a strong commitment to enriching the spirituality and faith understanding of his parishioners.

Father Redcay also completed a three-year training program in spiritual direction, run by the Institute for Priestly Formation in Omaha, Nebraska. He has been an adjunct spiritual director and apostolate supervisor for the seminary for many years and, additionally, served as a member of the Seminary Admissions Board for five years. It is a great joy to welcome him as the newest member of our priest faculty!

The vision of seminary formation has been greatly enhanced by the 2016 Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis, which offers a very holistic approach to training and forming men for the ministerial priesthood. The new 6th edition of the Program for Priestly Formation (USCCB), has confirmed and implemented this vision by requiring programs to examine themselves through the lens of “stages”, instead of academic structures.  The “Propaedeutic Stage” is the first stage, designed to be a period of preparation that enables the men to properly enter into the life of the seminary with a solid foundation of human, spiritual, intellectual and pastoral formation.  During this stage, participants begin to develop a life of prayer, study, fraternity and appropriate docility to formation (PPF).

Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has significantly benefitted from offering a “propaedeutic stage” through its well-established “Spiritual Year,” now in its 9th year of operation. Based on much practical experience, and with the wisdom of our seasoned formators, we are well equipped to transition to the new model envisioned by the Ratio and the PPF#6.  Effective Fall 2023, the Seminary will begin offering two distinct Propaedeutic Year programs – one for those entering Pre-Theology, and one for those entering College seminary. The duration of each program will be one full calendar year (August – July).

August 6, 2023 – The northern foundation wall of the college dormitory have been built, the shaft for the college building elevator has been completed, the concrete floors have been poured for the library section (lower portion) and the office section (mid portion) of the student life building, the upper section of the student life building (refectory/auditorium) has been filled with packable dirt and stone, and an access road on the east side of Alexandria Hall is being filled in.

All are invited to participate in a new prayer initiative in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia – Philly Adoration for Vocations.  

Held each Thursday between 9 am and 4 pm in Sacred Heart Chapel at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Catholics are invited to spend time before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament praying for vocations and ask Him to bless His Church with many holy vocations.  We encourage everyone to pray that those whom the Lord is calling will have the courage to respond to His invitation.

Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary received a letter from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in which they informed the Seminary of our reaccreditation for an additional eight years.  This accreditation decision comes in addition to our February accreditation by the Association of Theological Schools.

The Middle States accreditation is the result of an exhaustive self-study, prepared by members of our administration, faculty and staff, and a comprehensive visit by the accreditation team.

Special thanks to the Seminary’s internal team which worked very hard to prepare our self-study report and to coordinate the visit of the accreditation team.  In addition, several members of our board, and many seminarians and friends also participated in the study.

This accreditation is a powerful statement about the quality of our program, the excellence of our faculty  as well as the overall management of the seminary by our administrative staff.
